EVA vs PVC vs Rubber: Choosing the Right Material

Buyers often ask us to “just use the cheap one.” The honest answer is that the right base material depends on the use case. Here is the practical breakdown we give every AOWEIDA customer.

Flexibility & feel

EVA sits in the sweet spot: soft and springy without feeling plasticky. PVC foam is stiffer and can feel cold; rubber is the most elastic but also the heaviest and most expensive to mold.

Cost

On a per-kg basis: EVA ≈ PVC < rubber. But EVA’s lower density means you often need less material by volume, which narrows the gap in real parts.

Eco & compliance

  • EVA — recyclable, low-VOC, easy to certify to REACH / RoHS.
  • PVC — contains plasticizers; harder to clear strict EU limits.
  • Rubber — natural grades are biodegradable but vulcanization adds complexity.

Our rule of thumb

Choose EVA for footwear, sports, packaging and most consumer goods. Choose rubber for high-abrasion industrial parts. Avoid PVC if you sell into the EU or to eco-conscious brands.
